EDIT: Found the actual ad on CL. NPOCP? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Whenever my Dad gets a new job there is a good chance we will need to add another car to the stable since all 5 of us will be working, espicially since I’ve been commuting in his Taurus. Conveniently an old friend of my Dads just texted him saying that he has a “slightly” used Lexus for sale. The car is a 1999 Lexus GS400 that he would sell to us for $2000. If we end up putting an offer in on the car the biggest issue is the miles, 283,000 of them. Knowing nothing else about the car would you trust buying one of these with that many miles for the price?

My dad had a ‘99 GS300 in maroon with these same wheels from a newer GS on it.

I know a guy that buys Avalons with 80K on the clocks and adds 200K to that...then sells the cars for $2000 to one of his customers who puts another 75-100K on the things before they’re worn out...make of that what you will but he’s on his third Avalon.

If that is the actual picture of the car, go for it.

Sadly it is not. Just the first result when you GIS 1999 Lexus GS400

Look at the car, the general condition first, $2000 is NP for a 99 GS400.

Go for it. I’ve bought several Toyotas with over 200k miles (including 2 with over 300k) and as long as you do a good inspection there’s really nothing to worry about (the one time I didn’t look it over thoroughly is where I got burned). $2000 for a reliable entry luxury vehicle is a NP.

My parents have a rule about no cars over like 40k miles.

But I would trust a 283,000 mile LExus.

I drive a GS400, these cars are absolutely bulletproof. The main bearings are 6-bolt and the diff is basically the same as the Supra MKIV. $2K if it’s in decent shape with a new-ish timing belt is a steal.

I’d go for one with lower miles. Higher mileage cars, even reliable ones may need a certain amount of maintenance catching up-ing.

I’m not a fan of the styling, but as long as it’s been maintained I wouldn’t be too scared of the mileage. Matt Farah recently bought an LS400 with 900k miles on it. At $2000 your choices are kind of limited.

I'd also keep an eye out for lower mileage cars. Ones that aren't driven much could also have nasty little problems.

I mean more like 70k-140k cars rather than cars with that many miles on them.

Urgh. I cried myself to sleep when an IS300 with 90K miles slipped out of my grasp in less than ten minutes.
